5 Practical Tips To Managing Your Stress

At some time or another, we all have to deal with some form of stress. The important thing is to keep stress from taking over our daily life. You can do this by using a few simple techniques to keep your emotions up and the blues away.

Pet your pet. One of the many benefits of having a pet is the way they can help reduce your stress level.  For many years, experts have agreed that people who have pets may lead happier and healthier lives thanks to their animal friends. Gently stroking a cat or dog can easily lower stress levels and increase happiness.

Take a hike. Not in a bad way.  Studies show that walking at least 30 minutes a day can significantly ease stress. It doesn’t matter if you walk outdoors (around the block or in the woods) or indoors using a treadmill; the main thing is to get up and get moving.  You can burn of some stress as well as a few calories.

Common scents. A lot of people often unwind with their favorite scented candles, but few are aware that particular scents have a deeper calming effect that may actually reduce the effects of stress. Lavender and vanilla are two aromas that you may find especially soothing.  Lavender is good to help you rest if you’re too tense to sleep.  Vanilla can soothe the pain of a tension headache related to stress.

Just breathe. You’ve probably heard the old saying that says take a deep breath and count to 10 to soothe your anger. Well, the same can be said for stress. Breathing in a rhythmic way can boost positive emotions as it helps to stimulate activity in the areas of the brain that are responsible for positive thoughts. Positive thinking supports happiness, which is one clear way to calm stress.

Treat yourself. Whether you’re feeling a little down or you just need a quick pick-me-up, take time for yourself. Sip of your favorite beverage, savor a light snack that tempts your taste buds or just take a “me” break. When one errand runs into another and days seem to fly by so quickly that we barely even notice them, it may be time to get out of the rut and take a moment to enjoy life by treating yourself to something great.
