Massage Therapy – Part of a Healthy Lifestyle

By Lovelyn Bettison

Massage therapy becomes more and more popular every year. Most people are aware of the stress reducing benefits of massage, but many still view it as a luxury. They get massaged occasionally when they want to treat themselves to something special. Massage has had an important healing role in many ancient cultures and should continue this role in this culture. Sadly, it’s not part of most people’s health maintenance routine and these people miss the benefits that massage can offer them.

This is unfortunate because massage has valuable health benefits. Massage increases circulation. This increases the amount of nutrients that flows to cells. It pushes toxins out of muscles and increases the flow of lymph. This increase in circulation also helps speed healing times of injured muscles. It is generally good for muscle health and flexibility.

Massage affects hormone production. When given saliva hormone tests after receiving massage, people routinely show lower levels of cortisol. Cortisol is a stress hormone. All of us experience stress, so we’ve all had elevated cortisol levels. When we are consistently stressed for a long period of time our cortisol levels stay consistently elevated. Elevated cortisol levels are linked to problems like high blood pressure, lower immunity, unstable blood sugar levels, lower bone density, and suppressed thyroid function. High cortisol levels also cause your body to store more fat in the abdominal region. This is the most dangerous area to store fat in your body and is linked with an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

Massage also helps strengthen the immune system, increase skin health and lower blood pressure. Massage provides you with so many health benefits and it feels great too.

Massage can help treat a variety of conditions like, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis, bursitis, hypertension, anxiety, fibromyalgia, sciatica, and headaches. If you have a muscle related injury, massage can help your injured muscles heal. Common ailments like back pain, neck pain and shoulder pain can be treated with massage. Massage has even been used to ease the symptoms of autistic children.

Massage isn’t great for every ailment though. If you have certain conditions you shouldn’t receive a massage. Don’t get a massage when you have a fever, an infection, neuropathy or a kidney condition. If you have high blood pressure you should seek permission from your doctor before you get a massage.

Your reason for getting a massage will help you determine what kind of massage you should get. Some forms of massage are more relaxation focused. Others are more therapeutic in nature. Some forms of massage use deep pressure and others use very light pressure. You can decide what type of massage best suits you and make massage part of your healthy lifestyle.

Lifestyle Diet

By Renee FeldmanLifestyle Diets

It’s become increasing clear that diets don’t work. Most of the popular diets that people have tried over the past few years focused on restricting or even eliminating whole food groups. People lost weight on these diets and then, of course gained the weight back. Now there is a small and hopefully growing trend towards lifestyle diets.

Lifestyle diets focus on how one lives and then proposes easy to implement changes to help people to lose and most importantly keep weight off. This is very important because yo yo dieting is dangerous and may cause some serious health threats. A study done at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center by Dr. Ulrich found that the women who yo yo dieted the most had a lower number of natural killer cells. These killer cells are the cells in your immune system that aim at viruses.

The statement above does not mean that people should not try to lose weight. Obesity contributes to many disease states and is being considered as a separate risk factor when health care professionals evaluate heart disease risk. What this does mean is that people need to lose weight by making small changes that fit into their lives. Here are some principles that people can follow to make small changes in order to achieve permanent weight loss:

Plan Ahead

Portion Control

Fill Up With Fiber

Take 3 Deep Breaths And Drink Water

Balance Your Choice

Cheat

Plan Ahead: Eating mindlessly with no plan is like driving to a new destination with no directions. You need to have a plan for eating at home, work and while traveling or eating out. Fill your refrigerator with fresh cut vegetables and fruits so that they’re easy to get to. If you have to keep high fat and sugar foods in your home, put them somewhere where it’s difficult for you to get to and stay away from that food. Better yet, don’t have it in your home in the first place. Buy pre-cooked lean protein, low fat high fiber cereals or low sodium, low fat frozen dinners so that there is always healthy food around.

Portion Control: This is one of the most important areas of any lifestyle diet. Some people refuse to eat “rabbit food” and have lives that socially revolve around food that isn’t good for weight loss. These people will do best by significantly reducing their portions. Start by leaving a third of what you normally eat on your plate.

Fill Up With Fiber: Fiber is an essential part of weight loss because it makes you feel full and helps you with elimination. When purchasing cereals, check the label for a fiber number of over 5 grams. This will be under the carbohydrate section. You can also get lots of great fiber from fruits and vegetables.

Take 3 Deep Breaths and Drink Water: When you are about to binge and are eating out of emotion as opposed to hunger try this: stop and take 3 long and slow deep breath, exhaling as slowly as possible. Then drink a big glass of water and wait 10 minutes before you go for that binge. You just may skip it.

Balance Your Choice: This step has a small learning curve, but try to have a bit of a protein and a carbohydrate with every meal. This will help to control your blood sugar levels and insure more adequate nutrition.

Cheat: Everyone needs a break and if you stop eating all the foods that you enjoy, you will resent your eating habits and binge. Therefore, plan one day per week, it could be a special event where you allow yourself some of your favorite foods. Try to still be aware of portions when you do this.

A Frugal Lifestyle

By Edwin ShacklefordThe word “frugality” has left a more negative connotation for most people than simply being a saver, a cheapskate or tightwad. There is a thin line difference to saving and too much frugality to the point of being awkward and ridiculous. This is where the negative connotation comes from.

But if you are guided with the right principles and reasons in deciding to live a frugal life, you would never go wrong.

If you have decided to live frugally, no need to be worried of insults. Keep your head up high. And keep your focus through these tips.

1. Eating Out – Having gimmicks with friends on a Friday night is fine if you do it once in a while. But this can be expensive if you add them up at the end of the month.

2. Clothing – Naturally, if you are the kind of person who adores signature and designer clothes, do not expect that there will be something left of your take home pay. Instead of being trendy, wear clothes that can easily be matched with your other clothes.

3. Own Home – If you are planning to move out and find a place to settle, do not be overwhelmed by the excitement, instead be practical. As a start, buy a smaller house or try other ways like rent-to-own, do-it-yourself arrangements, and owner financing.

4. Buying Your Own Car – Shy away from sports cars or SUVs. Just stick to your purpose of buying a car which is to transport you anywhere you need to go. Check out also program cars like a new car warranty. Maybe this is not just the best time to replace your car with a new one.

5. Shopping for Groceries – As much as possible do not go with items that are branded. Choose non-brands and try looking for items on the highest or lowest shelves for best prices. Grab the opportunity and shop during sales or use coupons.

6. Family Out – There are inexpensive ways to bond with your family and be entertained like going to libraries, local parks, malling, picnics, visit friends and local church.

7. Buying School Supplies – Stock school supplies at home and do not buy anything fancy.

8. Be contented with what you have and try to live within what you earn.

9. Plan your Child’s College Education – Teach them the ways to be independent and self-supporting by encouraging them to apply for scholarships and “on campus jobs”.

10. Be Aware of your Financial Limitations

11. Anticipate your Failures by Planning – Have always a budget plan so you would avoid impulsive buying.

Immigration

By Paul BabsThe lure of riches in a foreign land, the potential of awesome new opportunities, dreams of what might be – all these sometimes entice people to immigrate to a different country. Being reunited with a loved one or just longing for adventure are also strong reasons for immigrating. Sometimes, rather than being drawn to a new country, one is pushed: religious persecution, starvation when the crops have failed, escaping unbearable family situations. Certainly wars, revolutions and political unrest have caused thousands to try to find a peaceful existence elsewhere. And decades ago, many were forced against their will to live in a new country as slaves or as prisoners.

For all who move on, pulling up roots from their homeland can be traumatic. It truly is not an easy decision to make, and today about 15% of those who leave their native country choose to return, finding that adjusting to a new society is too difficult.

The easiest transitions occur when the immigrants can find a community made up of people from their native home. They can keep a lot of their old customs while integrating the new country’s language, values and culture. Experience seems to indicate that to be happy they need to wholeheartedly try to assimilate the new ways and not begrudge the environment being different. Home is where the heart is! Home needs to be wherever we are!

While planning to remain permanently in the new country, most find work and strive to own a home of their own. They learn the new language (sometimes laughingly) and educate their children in the new ways, without having the children cut the bonds that tie them to their native roots. To honor both countries with love is the goal!

Immigrants have made enormous contributions to the economies and cultures of their new countries, yet these are often made with tremendous difficulty. Newcomers face many challenges in being accepted, and when they arrive from being ‘pushed’ to the new country, rather than ‘longing’ for it, the transition is even harder. Sometimes those original dreams just don’t come true.

The immigrants who make a very good living in the new country and are able to send money home to relatives in the native country are usually glad they made the transition. Some are able to establish business links with the businesses back home, helping to ease the problems that are faced there. Other immigrants finally retire and return to their native land for their old age, only to find that it, too, has changed.

Ultimately we each have to learn to cherish where we are. The old saying, “Where ever I go, I go, too!” still rings true.

A Law is Really a Lifestyle

By Adrianna NotonLaw isn’t just that. It embraces a vast range of topics and ways. There is probably a rule that fits just about everyone in the world. For nearly all the civilized countries, anyway, there are vast amounts of regulations that would take an ordinary person a life-time to read through, and then more than eighty per cent would not have any relevance whatever to one’s daily life. You think. But they may.

There are laws that have never been enacted. Rules that are obscure. Regulations that were made centuries ago, repealed, reworded, and trotted out in other guises. Some regulations that exist now, are so obsolete that even lawyers have not a clue what they are about.

The lady who stands for law has three symbols in her hands, that symbolize what exactly the three rules are. The sword is a statement of what the courts stand for; the scales show what each claim should be weighed; and the blindfold says that the justice given should be given out objectively, without fear or favour. Many have tried to bend this to their own favour, but somehow justice usually has her way.

Justice systems cover everyone’s day-to-day life. When one walks out of one’s house, the legal system kicks in. No-one else has any right, unless permitted, to enter that house, until the owner returns. No damage must be done to it, or the insurance regulations kick in. Break and enter that house, and, if you are caught, a world of grief awaits one.

Medical health is another heavily populated street. People are encouraged to insure themselves against illness, injury, loss of income, and a myriad of other causes. If one has disabilities caused at the job itself, then there is a justice to help them gain some benefits for their mis-fortune. But, on the reverse side, there are also laws that protect the employer too.

Breaking any rule, whether one knows it or not, can land one in seriously hot water. The excuse of “But I was not aware of that rule”, seldom cuts any ice in a court of justice. A working knowledge of the regulations in the system is useful.

While drunk, riding a giraffe down the street might not be well-known, substitute the word “giraffe” for any other article that one rides, and one is carted off very quickly, usually for one’s own protection.

It can be very expensive to appear in a court. Each person there is really an employee of the justice system, and, as such, need to be paid. If the misdemeanor is such that one narrowly misses jail, then a fine is issued, which is part of the process. A judge sets this, and the legal terms within which the fine must be paid. Other parts of the sentence are also added to the fine, such as community service, and other things, such as certain clinics or services that one must attend.

The ramifications of law are wide-spread. Spend half-an-hour on the Internet and find out many regulations that one has never heard of. The law in some countries, for instance, states that a thief must lose one hand for an offense, and both, if it is severe enough. There are penalties, and penalties. If the man one the giraffe, for instance, does it once, he may be fined, and the giraffe confiscated for a day or two, until the owner sobers up. But, if he does it several times, and is arrested several times, then he might be looking at several weeks or months in a jail, the loss of his giraffe, and being made attend several clinics to address his drink problem.

About the Author: The lives of the disabled have improved from the advancements in technology and society, however, there are still many challenges. Fight for your legal rights and get your disability claims approved by your insurance company with the help of a Ontario disability lawyer.

Introduce Small Changes In Your Child

By Irsan Gao

We have all come across children who are overweight and struggle with small chores in the house or elsewhere. They are unable to walk, run and play like other children do. It’s disheartening to see children who are really young struggling like this. Obesity can become a major challenge in their later years of life. Probably a bit of dieting and physical exercise is what is needed to help such children.

There are possibilities that we have a child or children in our homes that have a possibility of being over weight. Being a parent we must work towards helping to get out of this situation and seek medical help. Reasons must be found out as to why she/he is obese and has excess weight. If overeating turns out to be the root cause then instant action to control the situation and steps towards working towards this issue needs to be taken. This is done to ensure that the child will lead a normal life not worried about weight issues.

Food should not be given as a reward for doing something good, this only becomes a punishment for the child; instead healthy alternatives should be introduced. Empty the fridge and the pantry of the junk food. This will help the family too to pick healthier choices. Pack the child’s lunch yourself so that you are sure of what the child is eating, instead on depending on the school lunches.

Set and example at home by making healthy snacks at home and keep them in the fridge. Encourage the children and other family members to eat these foods when snacking. Cut those fresh fruit and vegetables which are more inviting to eat. Some healthy snack alternatives are nuts individually wrapped and yogurt. This will keep a control of the portions as well. Cut on those sugary drinks and soft drinks. Inculcate the habit of sipping water.

Introduce fun filled physical activity for your child/children. Activities such as dance classes, a physical sport, a walk or jog with the entire family, etc. Activities which keep the children glued in one place should be avoided or restricted. These include watching television, playing video games. Children can spend hours doing this and you as a parent must restrict it the most natural way. During that time introduce a fun filled physical activity and make it a must for everyone to attend it. They must look forward to it.

You as a parent can be a great support for building a healthy lifestyle for your children. Do not hesitate to introduce those small changes in order to help your child reduce weight and overcome obesity. This will go a great deal with them and they will honestly appreciate you for giving them healthier lifestyle. So what are you waiting for? Give your child the healthiest lifestyle and make their later years to come much healthier.

So give your child the healthiest lifestyle for him and make that foundation so strong that it goes a long way with him. I hope this helps your child a great deal.

Lifestyle Therapy For Hypertension – 5 Things You Can Do

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, has been called the silent killer. It certainly is a serious condition many people have and certainly many unknowingly. Although there are drug based treatments available, the foundation of every program should be lifestyle changes and these changes are healthy for everyone regardless of whether they have hypertension or not. Here they are:

1) Exercise. Regular exercise is good for you and as little as 30 minutes of moderate exercise can lower your Systolic blood pressure by 4 to 9 points. This could be a brisk walk, a game of basketball, time on a treadmill or exercise bike or any of a number of things. There is bound to be some activity you enjoy that is easy for you to do too.

2) Diet, is unfortunately important. I wish I could eat and drink everything I want, and I can, but not always. Some moderation is the key. The Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension, also known as the DASH Diet, is often recommended. Although we can’t discuss all the details here, it involves lowering your sodium intake to less than 2400mg a day, and even less is better. It also involves lowering the amount of animal products you eat as well as highly processed foods. This diet can drop your systolic pressure up to 22 points.

3) Weight, is often connected to the two above, diet and exercise. This is one of the toughest yet most important for most people, and dropping 20+lbs can easily drop your systolic pressure between 5 to 20 points. I’m working on this one now.

4) Alcohol use. Limit yourself to two drinks a day. This really does make a difference as I can attest to. I ‘m a big wine drinker, but have cut way back on my doctors advice.

5) Stress. Too much stress in unhealthy, although some stress is normal and OK. I have a stressful life! There are a number of ways to moderate stress, including possible meditation and other relaxation techniques. I have some very relaxing hobbies for example, and also find that merely trying to be 5 minutes early instead of fighting to be barely on time helps reduce my stress levels a lot.

Unfortunately I have hypertension like millions of other people. It’s nice to know that lifestyle changes, adding exercise, eating right, controlling your weight, limiting alcohol use, and moderating stress can help a lot. It’s even better if you do these!

A good cup of coffee often relaxes me and reduces stress. Visit Single Serve Coffee Maker or Black and Decker Brew ‘N Go for my take on coffee makers.

Sleep And The Shift Worker

By Jeff FosterThere are millions who work the non-traditional employment hours. Some choose to work outside the normal 8 to 5 block as a benefit to their family, for a more flexible lifestyle and even because they find themselves more of a night owl than not.

So what are you supposed to do about restorative sleep if you work shift work? The flexibility of shift work is great but it can cause you to have insufficient sleep which can cause you to be less than productive and unable to focus well.

This can completely throw your normal body functions into a whirl, throwing your natural sleep cycle, the Circadian rhythm, into chaotic turmoil.

The Circadian rhythm signals when you should sleep and when you should wake by the release and hold back of specific hormones, neurotransmitters and other brain chemicals.

When you work shift work your body’s normal sleep patterns are clearly interrupted, leaving you with fewer hours of sleep in general and a much lower quality of sleep. .

Sleep depravation symptoms begin to show up rather quickly leaving you with a lower capacity to concentrate and focus, with irritability, depression, tension and unbelievable fatigue. It can put you at risk during your time at work, leaving you more likely to make mistakes, cause accidents and to even have a propensity for absenteeism or chronic tardiness.

Regardless of whether you choose to work shift work or not, you must determine that you will get adequate sleep when you get off from work. Keep your room cool, quiet, and dark. Create the traditional nighttime environment. It can help you to get the restorative sleep that you need.

Sleep and the shift workers can make a beautiful marriage as long as you are willing to put forth the effort to make sure that you actually get the sleep your body craves.
